Canadian Standards Program
Canadian Standards Program (CSP)
Advance Beyond Foundations
The Canadian Standards Program (CSP) is an advanced-level professional development program designed for trainers who want to deepen their understanding of canine behaviour, learning science, ethics, welfare, coaching, and professional application.
The program has also been developed to support trainers who are preparing to challenge the National Exam and pursue designation as a Registered Dog Trainer (RDT™️) through the Canadian Association of of Professional Dog Trainers (CAPDT).
Created for dedicated dog training professionals, CSP moves beyond introductory concepts and challenges students to think critically, apply evidence-based practices, strengthen their practical skills, and continue evolving as modern trainers.
Grounded in humane, evidence-based training principles, this comprehensive program combines advanced theory, practical application, critical thinking, and professional development.
A Higher Level of Professional Education
The Canadian Standards Program was designed for trainers who are ready to go deeper.
Rather than simply teaching techniques, CSP explores the science, ethics, mechanics, and decision-making processes behind effective training and behaviour modification.
Students are encouraged to examine behaviour through a more comprehensive lens — considering learning theory, emotional state, physical wellness, environmental factors, welfare, communication, and the human-animal relationship.
This is not simply about teaching behaviours.
It is about developing thoughtful, skilled, ethical professionals capable of creating meaningful and lasting change for dogs and their guardians.

The Evolution of Dog Training
Module 1
Module 1 explores the history and evolution of dog training, from early dominance-based approaches to the development of modern, evidence-based practices grounded in learning science, welfare, and behaviour. Students will gain a deeper understanding of how training philosophies have changed over time, the influential figures who shaped the industry, and why humane, force-free methods are now considered best practice in professional dog training. This foundational module helps students build critical thinking skills and a strong ethical framework for working with dogs and their guardians.
The Science of Canine Learning Theory
Module 2
Module 2 This module explores advanced canine learning theory and the deeper behavioural science that underpins effective, ethical dog training. Building on foundational concepts, students will examine the complexities of how dogs learn through classical and operant conditioning, reinforcement, punishment, motivation, timing, emotional states, and reinforcement schedules. Emphasis is placed on critical thinking, behavioural analysis, and the practical application of learning theory in real-world training and behaviour modification scenarios.
Students will develop a more nuanced understanding of the mechanics of learning, allowing them to make informed training decisions, adapt their approach to individual dogs, and create meaningful, lasting behavioural change. This module challenges students to move beyond simply applying techniques and toward truly understanding the science, ethics, and behavioural processes that drive successful training outcomes.
The Ethics Module
Module 3
Module 3 focuses on ethics, professionalism, and responsibility within the dog training industry. Students will explore topics such as humane training practices, client communication, professional boundaries, advocacy, welfare considerations, and ethical decision-making when working with dogs and their guardians. This module encourages critical thinking and helps future trainers develop a strong professional foundation built on integrity, compassion, transparency, and evidence-based practices.
The Training Toolbox
Module 4
Module 4 provides an in-depth exploration of the professional dog trainer’s toolbox, with a focus on advanced equipment application, training mechanics, reinforcement strategy selection, management systems, and practical handling skills used in modern training and behaviour modification. Building beyond introductory equipment knowledge, students will critically examine the function, purpose, limitations, and ethical considerations of a wide range of training tools and management solutions, as well as how their use may influence learning, behaviour, emotional state, and overall welfare.
Students will develop a deeper understanding of how to thoughtfully select, combine, and apply equipment and reinforcement strategies based on the individual dog, behavioural goals, environmental variables, and training context. Significant emphasis is placed on observation skills, timing, body mechanics, leash handling, antecedent arrangement, environmental management, and the trainer’s ability to create clear, efficient, and humane learning experiences.
This module encourages students to move beyond simply using tools and toward understanding the behavioural science, practical application, and decision-making processes that support effective, ethical, and individualized training outcomes for both dogs and their guardians.
Shaping Skills in Dogs and Guardians
Module 5
Module 5 focuses on the development of advanced practical training, instructional, and coaching skills required to effectively work with both dogs and their guardians in real-world settings. Expanding beyond foundational training techniques, students will examine the mechanics, behavioural processes, and strategic application of shaping, capturing, luring, prompting, fading, chaining, stimulus control, and reinforcement delivery within complex training scenarios.
A strong emphasis is placed on developing precise observation skills, training mechanics, timing, problem-solving abilities, and the trainer’s capacity to adapt training plans based on the individual learner, environmental variables, emotional state, motivation, and behavioural history. Students will explore how subtle changes in communication, reinforcement strategy, antecedent arrangement, and session structure can significantly impact learning outcomes.
In addition to technical dog training skills, this module examines the science and practice of effectively coaching human learners. Students will develop advanced communication and instructional skills designed to improve guardian understanding, compliance, confidence, and long-term success. Topics include client education, behaviour change support, troubleshooting common implementation challenges, managing expectations, and fostering strong working relationships built on empathy, professionalism, and clear communication.
This module challenges students to think critically about both canine and human learning processes while developing the practical skill set necessary to create thoughtful, individualized, and sustainable training outcomes.
The Body - Behaviour Connection
Module 6
Module 6 explores the important connection between physical health, emotional wellbeing, and behaviour in dogs. Students will learn how pain, discomfort, nutrition, genetics, medical conditions, development, and overall wellness can influence behaviour and training outcomes. This module encourages a whole-dog approach to training and behaviour modification, helping future trainers recognize when behaviour may have an underlying physical component and when collaboration with veterinary professionals is essential.
Behaviour Across the Canine Lifespan
Module 7
Module 7 examines canine behaviour and development across the lifespan, from early puppyhood through adolescence, adulthood, and the senior years. Students will learn how genetics, environment, socialization, developmental stages, and life experiences influence behaviour over time. This module helps future trainers understand age-appropriate behaviour, recognize developmental challenges, and adapt training and support strategies to meet the changing needs of dogs and their guardians throughout every stage of life.
Canine Health & Care
