How to Calm an Overly Excited Dog (Without Yelling)

Feb 27, 2026

If your dog jumps, spins, barks, or becomes frantic when something exciting is about to happen, it’s easy to assume the problem is “too much energy.”

In reality, the issue is usually impulse control.

Excitement itself isn’t the problem. Many dogs become animated when they see a leash, hear the door open, or anticipate a walk or play session. The challenge is that dogs are rarely taught what to do with that excitement.

Self-control is not automatic. It is a skill that must be learned.

Just like any other behaviour, impulse control develops through practice in situations where the dog can succeed. If the first time a dog is expected to stay calm is in the middle of an exciting moment, the difficulty level is already very high.

This is why these skills are best introduced in calm, predictable settings before being tested in more stimulating situations.

A small shift can begin to build this structure.

Before something exciting happens—such as putting the leash on or opening the door—ask your dog for a sit. When the dog sits, the process can continue. If the dog pops up, jumps, or becomes frantic again, simply pause. Reset the moment. Ask for the sit again.

There is no need for frustration or correction. The situation itself provides the lesson.

Calm earns access.

Over time, dogs begin to understand that staying composed is what allows the exciting event to happen. The leash goes on, the door opens, the walk begins—but only when the dog shows a moment of self-control.

This one shift reveals a larger truth about training:

Excitement needs structure.

When dogs are given clear expectations and consistent patterns, they learn how to regulate their behaviour even when something exciting is about to occur.

Impulse control doesn’t appear overnight. It develops gradually as dogs learn that calm behaviour consistently leads to good outcomes.

Train Your Own Dog introduces these skills step by step, helping guardians build impulse control in a way that transfers into everyday moments before the door opens, before the leash goes on, and before excitement takes over. 🐾
