Why Your Dog Pops Up Immediately After Sitting
Feb 27, 2026
If your dog sits on cue but immediately pops back up, the missing piece is usually duration.
Many dogs learn the movement of the behaviour very quickly. They understand how to put their rear on the ground when asked. But remaining in that position for a period of time is a completely different skill.
Position and duration are separate pieces of learning.
In many training sessions, guardians unintentionally reward the movement into the sit but never take the time to build the hold that comes after it. The dog sits, receives a reward, and then stands again right away. Over time, the dog learns that the behaviour ends as soon as their bottom touches the ground.
The sit itself becomes clear, but the duration never develops.
A small adjustment in timing can begin to change that.
After your dog sits, simply pause. Count quietly to three before marking and rewarding the behaviour. This short pause teaches the dog that the sit continues beyond the initial movement. It introduces the idea that staying in position is part of the behaviour.
It’s also important not to rush the release. If the dog pops up before the reward, calmly reset and try again rather than marking the behaviour too quickly.
As your dog becomes comfortable holding the sit for a few seconds, duration can grow gradually. The key is to increase time in very small increments so the dog continues to succeed. A few seconds becomes five, then seven, then ten, and so on.
This foundation also supports the next stages of training. Eventually, behaviours need to hold not only for longer periods of time, but also when the handler moves away or when the environment becomes more distracting. Building a clear understanding of duration early helps prevent confusion later when additional difficulty is layered in.
Progress slowly. Reinforce success. Let the dog clearly understand that the behaviour includes both the position and the hold.
Duration grows in tiny increments.
If you’re unsure how to layer time, distance, and distraction without confusion, Train Your Own Dog provides a structured progression that guides guardians step by step through building reliable behaviours. š¾
