Why Your Dog Still Pulls on Leash (And What You’re Missing)

Feb 27, 2026

If your dog pulls on leash, you’ve probably tried many of the common solutions.

Stopping when the leash tightens.
Turning around.
Switching equipment.
Offering treats along the way.

And yet, the pulling often returns.

This can feel frustrating, but leash pulling is rarely a stubbornness problem. More often, it comes down to reinforcement history.

Dogs repeat behaviours that work for them. If pulling on the leash moves the dog closer to interesting smells, other dogs, people, or movement, the behaviour is being rewarded — even if the guardian is frustrated.

From the dog’s perspective, pulling is effective.

Over time, that success builds a strong pattern. The dog learns that tension on the leash leads to access to the environment.

The challenge is that many guardians try to correct the pulling after it starts instead of teaching the dog where they should be walking in the first place.

Loose leash walking isn’t just about reacting to tension. It’s about helping the dog understand the reinforcement zone  the position beside you where walking calmly pays off.

And that position is much easier to teach before the environment becomes distracting.

A helpful shift is to separate training from the full walk.

Instead of trying to fix leash skills while covering distance, practice very short segments indoors or in a quiet area. Take just three to five steps with your dog beside you and reinforce that position. Then pause. Reset. Repeat.

Keep the sessions short and clear.

Most importantly, stop before the behaviour falls apart. Ending on success helps the dog understand exactly what behaviour earned reinforcement.

Over time, these short pieces begin to connect. The dog learns that staying near you is the behaviour that works.

This reveals something important about loose leash walking:

It isn’t repaired in the middle of a walk. It’s built in structured layers and then gradually transferred into more distracting environments.

When the foundation is clear, walks become calmer and more enjoyable for both dog and guardian.

If you’re tired of reacting to pulling instead of building the skill systematically, Train Your Own Dog walks you through the full progression—from early engagement to reliable loose leash walking in the real world. 🐾
